Personality Tests

"Personality" may be defined as your emotional dispositions, especially those which govern your interactions with other people. Research by Dr. Goldberg and others has clarified that there are five primary personality dispositions in many Western cultures, the "Big Five". These are all "bi-polar" traits, with different qualities at each end. We might call them Extroversion-Introversion, Agreeableness-Disagreeableness, Conscientiousness-Laziness, Emotional Stability - Instability, and Openness-Closemindedness.

The Big Five Inventory (BFI)

This 44-item test, developed by Oliver P. John, Ph.D. and V. Benet-Martinez in 1998, is in the public domain and has been normed on tens of thousands of adults. It provides a score for each of the Big Five personality traits (Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, Extroversion and Intellect or Openness). Scores on these traits can often explain important issues for adults and thus simplify counseling efforts. For example, an extrovert working as a night janitor was depressed. Finding a day job, where he could relate to other people, went a long way toward relieving his depression.

The Big 5/45 and CAPPs Report

The Big 5/45 is a comprehensive personality profile. It has 485 items that measure the Big Five personality traits (Extroversion, Agreeableness, Openness or Intellectual Interests, Emotional Stability and Conscientiousness). There are 9 facet scores within each of the 5 main traits.

In addition to scores on all 45 facets and total scores, you will receive hints on which of 305 jobs for which your personality might suit you. For many jobs, however, personality is not a strong predictor, so don't put too much faith in the job scores. More than by personality per se, career interests seem to be formed by experience, persons after whom we model ourselves, educational opportunities and on-the-job experiences.

Length of Test: 40-60 minutes
